Ο Γιάννη Μπολανάκης ολοκλήρωσε τις προπτυχιακές σπουδές του στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης (Τμήμα Βιολογίας), το έτος 2019. Πήρε τον τίτλο μεταπτυχιακών σπουδών «Περιβαλλοντική Βιολογία – Διαχείριση Χερσαίων & Θαλάσσιων Βιολογικών Πόρων», από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης (Τμήμα Βιολογίας)
Από το προπτυχιακό επίπεδο εστιάζει το ερευνητικό του ενδιαφέρον στα Κολεόπτερα (αλλά και άλλα Αρθρόποδα) της Κρήτης (συστηματική, βιογεωγραφία, οικολογία, προστασία). Έχει συμμετάσχει σε πληθώρα δειγματοληψιών στην Κρήτη με διαφορετικούς τρόπους παγίδευσης (παγίδες ζύμωσης, παγίδες παρεμβολής), καθώς και σε ερευνητικές αποστολές στην Ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα με σκοπό τη συλλογή βιολογικού υλικού (Αρθρόποδα).
Κατά την προπτυχιακή του απασχόληση στο εργαστήριο Αρθροπόδων του Μουσείου Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κρήτης (ΜΦΙΚ) ασχολήθηκε με τον προσδιορισμό δειγμάτων της οικογένειας Cerambycidae από όλο τον Ελλαδικό χώρο, καθώς και με την επιμέλεια των υγρών και ξηρών δειγμάτων της συγκεκριμένης οικογένειας στη συλλογή του ΜΦΙΚ. Επίσης στο εργαστήριο Αρθροπόδων του MΦΙΚ διεκπεραίωσε την πτυχιακή του εργασία με θέμα « Η Σαπροξυλική Κολεοπτεροπανίδα της Κρήτης». Κατά την εκπόνηση της μεταπτυχιακής του διατριβής με θέμα «Ο Ενδημισμός των Κρητικών Αρθροπόδων» στο εργαστήριο Αρθροπόδων του ΜΦΙΚ δημιούργησε βάσεις δεδομένων και χάρτες για τα κρητικά Αρθρόποδα.
Σήμερα ασχολείται με τον εμπλουτισμό, τον προσδιορισμό και την καταλογογράφηση των συλλογών Αρθροπόδων του ΜΦΙΚ, καθώς και με την προετοιμασία της διδακτορικής του διατριβής.
