The photographic archive of the Natural History Museum of Crete – Uoc supports the museum in the study and protection of the Cretan environment, but also of the wider Greek area and the eastern Mediterranean, as all missions are documented photographically.
It started operating in 1990 and since then enriches its material almost daily. In recent years, the slides have been digitized, identified by the researchers of NHMC-Uoc and registered electronically in a database, with over 10 keywords for each registration, a fact that facilitates their search and leads to better utilization of this valuable material.
So far it has about 133,000 records (41,600 slides, 2,500 negatives and 89,000 digital photos), all with environmental content. The largest part of the archive is from the missions of NHMC researchers in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean (images of animals, plants, fossils, vegetation and the general landscape), from specialized macro-studio photographs (eg microscopic organisms, fossils, etc.) and during the museum’s research projects. Also, there are images of human activities in nature, while an extensive archive covers the educational activities of the Museum. The archive also supports the Graphic Design Department of NHMC for the implementation of all publications and publications as well as for the configuration of its permanent or periodic exhibitions.
